I purchased two Autel EV chargers: a 50-amp unit and an 80-amp unit. The difference in activation design between the two is significant and ultimately caused substantial unnecessary expense.
The 50-amp unit activated easily via Bluetooth with no issues. The 80-amp unit, however, does not allow Bluetooth activation and instead requires activation through the charger’s built-in hotspot. That hotspot would not work, which appears to be a known and common issue.
I initially purchased the 80-amp charger from Amazon on December 20 and had it installed by a licensed electrician. When the unit would not activate, I contacted Autel support and spent over an hour troubleshooting. I was ultimately advised that the charger had a software issue and, based on that guidance, I was instructed to return it to Amazon and purchase a replacement directly from Autel Energy.
Relying on that advice, I purchased a replacement 80-amp unit from Autel Energy on January 6 and paid to have my electrician return to remove and replace the charger. Unfortunately, the replacement unit exhibited the exact same hotspot activation issue as the original.
It was later confirmed that the problem was software-related and not a defective unit. This makes the decision to exclude Bluetooth activation on the 80-amp model particularly frustrating. If Bluetooth activation were available—like it is on the 50-amp model—this entire situation likely would have been avoided.
As a result, I incurred:
1) The cost of purchasing a second charger upfront while still waiting for a refund on the original unit
2) An additional electrician service call that was completely unnecessary.
This experience highlights both a poor product design decision and inadequate initial support and troubleshooting. Customers installing high-amperage chargers often rely on licensed electricians, and activation failures tied to a single, unreliable method create unnecessary risk and cost.
Given the price point of these chargers, Autel should either provide Bluetooth activation on the 80-amp model or ensure that hotspot-based activation is reliable and properly supported. As it stands, I cannot recommend the 80-amp unit.
**UPDATE**: Following my original review, Autel addressed the issue and reimbursed me for the additional electrician service call that resulted from the activation problem. I appreciate that they took responsibility for the added expense and resolved the matter. Since then, I have had no further issues with the charger, and it has been operating properly and reliably.
While I still believe the activation process on the 80-amp model could be improved, I want to credit Autel for following through, reimbursing my additional cost, and ultimately resolving the problem.
